The Fit Girl’s Guide to Skin Care

If you are a fit girl like me you often spend a large amount of your time outdoors or working up a sweat and this can put your skin at risk of premature ageing, clogged pores or breakouts, and therefore it’s especially important to take care of your skin (just like you do your body).

Up until I was about 18 I suffered from severe eczema and as a result my skin was very sensitive to products full of harsh chemicals. It is because of this very reason that I am particular on what I use on my skin and prefer all natural skin care products where possible.

For your best skin yet here are my tips as well as my favourite products:

1. Remove make-up before working out.

The easiest way to cause pimples, breakouts and clogged pores is by sweating with a face full of make-up. I understand that not everyone exercises first thing in the morning and therefore you may have applied make-up for during the day before hitting the gym at the night but this doesn’t mean you should be sweating off your foundation mid-workout. I use Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water as it removes all make-up without vigorous rubbing (you won’t lose any precious eyelashes) and without any perfumes it doesn’t irritate my skin.

2. Scrub-a-dub once a week.

To get glowing skin you need to buff away the old, dead skin cells – both on your face and body. I use a coffee body scrub 1-2 times a week. Filled with hydrating coconut oil to smooth and moisturise dry skin, as well as ground coffee to help reduce eczema and psoriasis symptoms, it’s the perfect scrub for any skin. You can buy fantastic coffee scrubs but if you are in the mood make our own like I do – if you haven’t already made my version, you can do so by going to my past blog post here (wink wink!)

Willow & Charlie - Walnut & Oat 3-in1 Scrub

It’s important to choose a face scrub that is gentle, you want to aim for clear, glowing skin not a harsh, red rash! I have tried numerous in the past but my absolute favourite is Willow & Charlie’s walnut and oat 3-in-1 scrub. I use it once a week and it is amazing! Willow & Charlie products are handmade here in Australia and contain all natural ingredients (yay!) so you know their best selling scrub is going to work wonders. It is full of good oils (olive, macadamia, almond, coconut & grapeseed) so as well as buffing gently it leaves skin super soft and silky smooth.

3. Pamper with a face mask.

I am currently obsessed with charcoal face masks. Charcoal helps to suck up oil, dirt and other impurities from the pores leaving skin clear – especially important if you are like me and suffer from an oily T zone. My current fave? Sanctuary Spa’s 5 minute thermal detox mask, which contains charcoal and kaolin clay and is handily available from Priceline Pharmacies. To give my skin a little extra love and pampering, I use the charcoal mask after my face scrub.

4. Rehydrate your skin.

Just like you hydrate your body with water after exercising, your skin also needs hydration. I moisturise daily with a sorbolene cream to keep my skin in top condition and to reduce any possible irritation. Sorbolene is also inexpensive making it great for your wallet too. To reduce the risk of wrinkles (eeek!) each night I moisturise my face with either coconut oil or rosehip oil (Swisse make the best organic rosehip oil face moisturiser by the way!)

Lastly, if your lips are like mine they are suffering with the cooler change in weather. Pawpaw ointment is and always will be a winner, however lately I am addicted to Redwin’s coconut balm. The little tube is just as good as pawpaw ointment being packed full of hydrating organic coconut oil & jojoba oil to keep my lips chapped free. However I must admit the main reason I keep coming back to the coconut balm is because it smells unbelievably good! Redwin’s coconut balm is also available from Priceline Pharmacies.
