Hopman Cup Ball

When fashion and athletes at the top of their game come together I get more than a little excited! Luckily the hubby and I were invited last minute to attend such an event – the Hopman Cup Ball, held at the Crown Casino in Perth, and Bruug were on hand to help style my outfit at the last minute!

This year the Hopman Cup is a bigger deal than normal, the two Aussie representatives are both West Aussies (a first for the Hopman Cup) and Serena Williams is back in town.

The black tie affair saw Tennis stars don bow ties and fancy frocks. Late inclusion Matt Ebden and wife Kim made a stunning pair on the blue carpet and were the talk of the night, along with (of course) other fellow West Aussie Casey Dellacqua and partner Amanda Judd, who both made heads turn in trailing lace confections.

Designer Steph Audino was the obvious pick of the night with both Kim Ebden and Casey Dellacqua as well as numerous other stars and guests choosing the local designer to make themselves stand out. It was great to see other local designers represented such as Wild Horses (Flavia Pennetta), Betty Tran (Agnieszka Radwanska) and Natalie Rolt (Eugenie Bouchard and Lucie Sararova).

Serena Williams however bucked the black tie dress code when she walked into the ballroom in a red, floaty cocktail number. But then again if I had calf definition like Serena and glutes that could crush any nay-sayer I would wear whatever I wanted too. Plus, hello, it’s SERENA WILLIAMS. Enough said.

The night kicked off with Guy Sebastian singing “Like a Drum” in drop-crotch suit pants before drummer dancers paraded around the stage. Basil Zempilas, our host for the night, got the formalities rolling before introducing each tennis beauty and beau and their representative country. The latest Bachelor and local Perth boy Blake Garvey and (“controversial”) girlfriend Louise Pillidge also made their first public appearance at the Hopman Cup Ball. Basil was very excited to introduce Bachie and Louise – obviously being the professional he is, Baz wasn’t phased at all that The Bachelor featured on a rival network’s show… (Baz only mentioned “not Channel 7” once or five times…) Anyway after this announcement Basil very quickly got the night back on track to celebrating another soon to be fabulous Hopman Cup tournament and the athletes that will make it happen!

Putting all the jokes aside, the Hopman Cup Ball really was a wonderful night. The food was drool worthy and surprisingly filling. Guy quickly got the dance floor packed again after main course and continued to keep the attendees on their feet with soulful Blues. But better than the tunes and dessert it was the chance to mix and talk with down to earth, hard working and driven people like Matt and Casey. It’s no wonder they were all anyone wanted to talk about last night when they have so much talent on court, as well as being genuinely interesting and nice people off court – something that many professional athletes and sporting stars can lack. With that being said, obviously I’ll be backing our Aussies/West Aussies all the way!

So get on down to the Perth Arena to watch Matt, Casey and Serena otherwise tune into Channel 7 and 7Mate for everything Hopman Cup.
